Figure / Ground
For this project we started out with a 2 x 2 inch paper square and had to make 2 cuts and 2 folds to the piece of paper.
The first step in the process was playing with shadows and exploring same color contrast. Then we took the shapes and tried different arrangements on black and gray backgrounds to look at the contrast of positive and negative space in between the pieces. For the last study we had to make an additional 2 more cuts to the piece to add even more contrast between the figure and the background.
Color
For this project we started out with a 2 x 2 inch paper square and had to make 4 cuts and 2 folds to the piece of paper.
For my color exploration I chose an analogous color scheme going with navy blue because I thought it was a nice contrast for the bright green. I cut out about 40 of the 2 x 2 inch bright green squares and played with multiple different arrangements on the navy blue paper until I found a pattern that I thought had good contrast between positive and negative space as well as not overlapping on the page.
Shelter / Sculpture / Site
The accent color piece on the white background represents shelter due to its stability and with the most enclosed area to be able to hide underneath.
The white on black piece represents sculpture because it really stands out in its environment and has a nice flow to walk through. It is also very open making it more inviting for people to come walk through and explore the piece.
The black on white piece represents site because it can be walked through while also having a corner place to hangout if desired. It is also very open but still has a little bit of sanctuary to it providing both light and shade throughout.
